A Disabled (or Independent) Living Centre (DLC) is a place where you can get free and ethical information and advice about products which can increase disabled or older people's choices about how they live. At a DLC you can see and try out products and explore other solutions. Centres provide free information to people in person, by telephone, letter or email.
DLC s are led by a national organisation called Assist UK. We aim to improve disabled and older people's access to accurate, reliable and impartial information and advice about products and equipment for easier living.
"To lead a UK-wide network of centres that introduce people to products and solutions, which make life easier and safer, creating greater choice and control."
"To work towards the day when products for independent living are seen as a part of everyday life."
There are now 57 centres in the Assist UK network dealing with more than 250.000 enquiries per year, but this is just the tip of the iceberg. There are many gaps in the UK and the potential for growth is enormous. By way of explanation, if we compare Denmark where there are 50 technical aid centres (equivalent to DLCs) serving a population of approximately 5 million with the UK where a similar number of centres is striving to cope with a population in excess of 50 million.
